I support the “fiction isn’t real so nothing matters” mindset but tbf at a certain point it can tip over into “the curtains are just blue” territory

like yes actually there is a conversation to be had about how a characters actions are framed and how they thematically fit with the rest of the story and it can in fact reflect the author’s beliefs. some authors are even trying to make a point

not all depiction is glorification but sometimes it is and you need to be able to tell the difference. not because your immortal soul will be tainted by reading The Bad One, but because you need to have reading comprehension skills

I hope this isn’t a controversial opinion, but I would rather have my tax dollars go to people fraudulently using SNAP benefits than have a single person go hungry. And I mean real fraud, not selling food stamps to buy tampons or any of that. I wouldn’t care if half of the people receiving SNAP benefits didn’t really need them if it meant everybody in the US had enough food to eat. It’s food stamps. That’s the exact kind of thing taxes are supposed to be for. Food isn’t supposed to be a privilege or a luxury.

The ideal scenario, of course, would be that 100% of people do not require food assistance because food is necessary to live.

Defrauding help says more about them

Refusing genuine need because they MIGHT be lying says more about you

this also counts for all those times you kept your mouth shut and didn’t complain because you were being polite, and people would gladly have changed things if you had just asked. your suffering was not noble. you do not get a cookie for it, you do not get a tally mark next to your soul’s score for grinning and bearing it. your suffering serves no purpose. break free of it. you deserve comfort.

the people who care about you do not want you to be miserable and would be sad to find out you are sacrificing for them when you don’t have to be.

the people who expect you to keep quiet and never complain do not respect you or your feelings.
